Three-dimensional quantization of the electromagnetic field in dispersive and absorbing inhomogeneous dielectrics

چکیده
A quantization scheme for the phenomenological Maxwell theory of the full electromagnetic field in an inhomogeneous three-dimensional, dispersive and absorbing dielectric medium is developed. The classical Maxwell equations with spatially varying and Kramers–Kronig consistent permittivity are regarded as operator-valued field equations, introducing additional currentand charge-density operator fields in order to take into account the noise associated with the dissipation in the medium. It is shown that the equal-time commutation relations between the fundamental electromagnetic fields Ê and B̂ and the potentials  and φ̂ in the Coulomb gauge can be expressed in terms of the Green tensor of the classical problem. From the Green tensors for bulk material and an inhomogeneous medium consisting of two bulk dielectrics with a common planar interface it is explicitly proven that the well-known equal-time commutation relations of QED are preserved.

Quantization of electromagnetic fields in the presence of a spherical semiconductor quantum dot and spontaneous decay of an excited atom doped in this nanostructure
In this paper we consider electromagnetic field quantization in the presence of a dispersive and absorbing semiconductor quantum dot. By using macroscopic approach and Green's function method, quantization of electromagnetic field is investigated. Interaction of a two-level atom , which is doped in a semiconductor quantum dot, with the quantized field is considered and its spontaneous emission ...
متن کاملMicroscopic calculation of noise current operators for electromagnetic field quantization in absorbing material systems
We present a microscopic quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in dispersive and lossy dielectrics of arbitrary geometry. This method also describes anisotropic media and media driven by light field via a spatially nonlocal permittivity. The method removes the need for complicated diagonalization of material, reservoir and field variables and allows us to include the effect of all t...
متن کاملElectromagnetic field quantization in nonlinear and inhomogeneous dielectrics ∗
The electromagnetic field is quantized in nonlinear media whose dielectric functions and nonlinear susceptibilities may vary with space. Given the dielectric function and nonlinear susceptibilities, the Hamiltonian of the electromagnetic field is determined completely by this quantization method. From Heisenberg equations we prove that Maxwell’s equations are satisfied for the field operators. ...
متن کاملA New Guideline for the Allocation of Multipoles in the Multiple Multipole Method for Two Dimensional Scattering from Dielectrics
A new guideline for proper allocation of multipoles in the multiple multipole method (MMP) is proposed. In an ‘a posteriori’ approach, subspace fitting (SSF) is used to find the best location of multipole expansions for the two dimensional dielectric scattering problem. It is shown that the best location of multipole expansions (regarding their global approximating power) coincides with the med...
متن کاملQuantum approach to electromagnetic energy transfer between two dielectric bodies
The problem of radiative heat transfer between two dielectric bodies is analyzed from the point of view of elementary quantum electrodynamics. The dielectric properties of the bodies are assumed to be linear, but dispersion and losses are allowed. Quantization of the electromagnetic field in inhomogeneous, dispersive, and lossy dielectrics is performed with the help of the Huttner-Barnett proce...
